I’m continuously asked if there are any performance tips for vSphere 6. VMware has a great whitepaper here which encompasses a great deal of information! Excellent bedtime reading here, folks! Some of my favorite highlights:
- Make sure your hardware satisfies the hardware compatibility requirements.
- Know your virtual guest operating systems and applications.
- Benchmark your server hardware and use a performance monitor utility.
- Enable DRS and use Fully Automated vMotions!
- Keep VMware Tools up to date!
Than you for this post.
I can no longer see the comments on here… It’s messing with me a bit cause i need to refer to some of these comments.
What can’t you see? I think I have fixed it. It seems that one of my new plugins broke the comments. Should be fine now.
Will vSAN work with only traditional drives in the hosts, or is that inaccurate? I had been under the impression that vSAN needs SSD drives to work.
Thanks!
Josh, vSAN needs SSDs to work. An SSD is used for cache, HDD is used for capacity tier. You can however mark an HDD as an SSD for lab purposes. Don’t expect anything though in terms of performance. 🙂 https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.storage.doc%2FGUID-99BB81AC-5342-45E5-BF67-8D43647FAD31.html
